Personality: Terra can be described as 'two faced', as she has two personalities she takes on depending on the situation. One personality is her real personality, the other is her 'detached' personality.
Her 'real' personality is the one she shows to other trainers. She is a bit insecure about herself but tries to overshadow it with confidence. She wants to belong somewhere and have friends, but her insecurities prevent that. She comes off as easy going, because she doesn't want anyone to know how insecure she really is. Despite wanting friends, she's afraid of people becoming too close, and even her Pokemon she keeps at a distance, even though she acts like she has a bond with them. She has her secrets that she doesn't want anyone to find out.
Her 'detached' personality is what she uses when she's either battling or doing Team Rocket stuff. Her striving for acceptance carries over here, but this time she covers up her insecurities with determination. She's willing to sacrifice anything to succeed, and will even push her Pokemon beyond their limit. While she has a bond with her Pokemon, this side of her uses them only as tools, and she will 'detach' any emotions she feels towards them in order to emerge victorious. Using this detachment, she will be able to use her insecurities to convince herself that her friends really aren't friends at all, and use them or betray them for her own benefit. This side exists as a way for her to deal with the regret she feels over her parents' deaths.
Background: Terra grew up in a relatively normal household, the only child to an ex Pokemon Master and a Pokemon Doctor. Their stories involving Pokemon got her into training at an early age, so when she was 10 they gave her her starter Pokemon, a Sandshrew.
Terra loved her Pokemon. However, her Sandshrew didn't want to be trained by her, and would frequently ignore her attempts at training. Terra didn't seem to acknowledge this, and still loved her Sandshrew anyway, one day hoping of becoming a Pokemon Master. Saving up her money, she bought her Pokemon a gift that she hoped would get the little guy to listen to her: an Earthquake TM. She taught the Pokemon the move and hurried home to show her parents. The Pokemon was summoned, and performed the move, causing an Earthquake that Terra couldn't stop.
Terra's house collapsed in the earthquake and neither of her parents were seen ever again. Terra was frightened and ran, taking her Pokemon with her. Everywhere she went, she tried to train her Pokemon and ended up causing Earthquakes that raged out of control, because she could not control her Pokemon. In embarassment, she would flee, and the cycle would continue.
Team Rocket noticed her weakness, and decided to take her in as an agent, offering her not only a way to learn how to control her Pokemon better, but a way to earn acceptance from others like her. Desperately, she accepted.
Going through Team Rocket's training program was rough, but she learned how to become more assertive with her Pokemon. Eventually her Sandshrew began to trust her, and a team was acquired, both by robbing centers and legitimately capturing them. It took several years and lots of training, but she's managed to build herself a pretty extensive team, both from working as an undercover trainer and from working as an agent.
Terra currently travels undercover, traveling mainly under her nickname and tries to not only succeed as a Pokemon trainer, but also work under Team Rocket as well.
